On February 25 Sunday, HKF Martial Arts students had a good showing at the 38th annual Ken Shu Kan Hawaii Karate - Kobudo Championships. It was the first tournament for Rebecca & Justine Horikawa and they did very well against higher ranking belts. Justin Pajela got two first place trophies for Kata and Kumite against higher ranking belts also. Kalena Maioho, Aaron Mendoza, Albert Savellano all placed and brought home trophies. This tournament there was just one division for all belts. They didn't separate the ranks like they usally do, so you would think that the lower ranking students with less time training would be at a disadvantage. No such thing, Aaron Mendoza's division had brown and black together and the top 3 places were taken by all brown belts leaving 4 black belts out of the running. Albert Savellano took first place and was the lowest ranking competitor in his class. Kalena was at the top of her game and used this tournament for practice and showed alot of poise. Congratulations to all and remember Nationals (June) is around the corner and training begins now!!!!!!!!
